On March 3, 2009, Anti- Records will release the eagerly awaited new Neko Case album Middle Cyclone. The fifteen-track collection is Case's first release since 2006's Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, the best-reviewed and best-selling album of her career. Middle Cyclone was produced by Case with Darryl Neudorf and recorded in Tucson, Brooklyn, Toronto, and Vermont. It features Case backed by her core band - guitarist Paul Rigby, bassist Tom V. Ray, backing vocalist Kelly Hogan, multi-instrumentalist Jon Rauhouse, and drummer Barry Mirochnick - along with numerous guests including M. New TV comedy show, "The Librarians"

Half-lives lived in the suburbs are fodder for a new comedy set in a library, writes Michael Lallo.

As soon as Molly comes home from school, Robyn Butler orders her to disappear. "We're doing an interview because I'm very important," she tells her 11-year-old daughter. "You remember that, all right."

Molly rolls her eyes. "Yeah, OK Mum," she says.

While she might not be a star in her own home, Butler's prospects beyond the domestic sphere appear much rosier. Early next year she'll start filming The Librarians, a six-part comedy produced, written by and starring her and actor-director husband Wayne Hope (The Castle, Boytown). Hope will also direct.

"This is by far our biggest TV project," she says. "We're absolutely terrified, but ridiculously excited. It's our sword to fall on - not that I'm anticipating we're going to fall on our sword. But there's a great joy in not doing something where you think, 'Oh, it's not quite my bag', or 'I didn't write it'. This is ours."

Excited she should be. Butler's fortunes have been rising for some time. She recently left Triple M's successful ToughLove program after three years as Mick Molloy's sparring partner to focus on the series, and she's also writing a film screenplay titled Pink Amazons. (With a flourishing movie career of his own, Molloy subsequently decided to end ToughLove.)

More importantly, she's returning to her true passion: storytelling. "People's lives are fascinating," she says. "I'd love to know everybody's story. It doesn't have to be this big, monumental thing - it's the little things that are intriguing. I'm terrible to go out with because I stare at people constantly."

All that public gawping seems to have paid off. When the ABC's then head of drama, Scott Meek, read the script for The Librarians he virtually green-lighted it on the spot.

According to Aunty, viewers are in for a dose of "love, betrayal and revenge" - hardly the sort of stuff you'd expect to uncover in a suburban library as it gears up for Book Week. Or is it?

Libraries, Butler points out, attract all walks of life. Which is not exactly to the liking of Butler's character Frances O'Brien, head librarian and repressed, passive-aggressive Catholic. Naturally, O'Brien is a little intolerant of her Muslim, Asian and gay patrons. And when her childhood best-friend-turned-drug-dealer (played by Roz Hammond) gets a job as the children's librarian, chaos ensues.

Having lived in Melbourne for eight years I've come to love the city's twists and turns in laneways and street art. As a walker and public transport fan, I encounter the landscape as an active participant: a transient relationship.

I'm moved to go back along the same tracks like an ant or doleful sheep. The scenery never sleeps and lolls me a love song. Look listen breathe stare, touch me, till next time, floating in memory heartspace.

Tai Chi lesson at Exhibition building

I met up with Darren on the last day of 2006 for a tai chi session. We stretched out under the huge trees guarding the entrance to the world hertiage listed Exhibition building in Carlton.

These photos show Darren demonstrating his new moves from the opening sequence of the Yang form. As a beginner student of the yang form, Darren is working out the main stances and the feel of the transfer of weight. Empty and full foot. In tai chi we are looking for the connection between heaven and earth. To anchor like a tree's roots with the footwork. This gives the confidence in balance and form.
After our tai chi practice we headed to Brunswick street for coffee and breakfast. A perfect last morning to 2006.

Ian's birthday nestles into the fun of summer and December celebrations. A group of friends gathered to feast on yum cha at the Dragon Boat Palace in Lonsdale street. $16.80 for all you can eat. My stomach bleats.

At Yum Cha we spoke with our hands, so we could eat with our mouths.

Good cheer, excitment and glad hearted family memory making were the sentiments whiffing through the Phelan family Christmas celebrations. The Phelan clan of six sisters Maree, Geraldine, Louise, Clare, Frances, Paulette, one brother Philip, two sisters in law Hannah, Karen and one cherished baby Greta gathered in a rambling house in Daylesford.(Oh, and Poppy the dog. Woof)

The house was full of spiritual images, books and engery. Some of the buddha statues joined in with the festive goodwill of kindness.

Dear little Greta, who took her pleasure from the wrapping, the box, play and eating.

The kitchen bustled most of day. A tip of my hat to Louise, Geraldine and Clare for the delicious gourmet treats and for allowing me to capture sisters in domestic action.

Phil challenged all comers to boulle. The playing field was a backyard rut filled course. Well done mate. Next time, my oval at noon.

Seriously, Phil how much quiet do you need.

A dinner event to celebrate the end of 2006, saw our crack library team from Victoria Legal Aid, with special guest Louise Segafredo, nosh down at North Melbourne's Court House Hotel. Refined French cuisine as fabulous as Balzere in Lygon Street, less of the peasant rustic, more elegant tonality to the menu's food palette.With our tastebuds caressed and tossed with exitable selections of veal, fish and fowl, and softly set adrift with mineral water and dry wine, yum. In the tradition of merry making we shared our stories and open our hearts. Soula's playful feminised role of Santa Claus added another level of bedazzling sparkle to the night. Dessert was sublime with sensual floating lullabys of sweetness.

Wednesday the Eocv was amess of wheelie bins, frantic relocating of staff and wasted papers and long forgotten resources. Julie (pictured in office tinsel) and I ducked out for a coffee break, heading straight to Hardware lane. Eva and the Eat Drink Bento crew have mastered the art of hospitality. Stylish and smooth, some of the best coffee in town. We enjoyed a freshly baked mixed berry muffin. Their elegant and robust attention to the customer's experience is superb. This is a mature funky cool coffee haunt. Oh, they do great breakfast, lunch and dinners...the chef is happy to wander way from the menu to create a spur of moment dish to please.

Christmas catch up.

Elizabeth street is the location of this wonderful verandahed respite for coffee seekers. Great for a catch up with friends or making a little business. Darren had a latte with a serve of sugar. Lattes are served full bodied, creamed in after taste. Relaxing atmosphere inches away from the bustle of Christmas shoppers.

Woke at 4am this morning and the flat was filled with the smell of the bushfires smoke. We are surrounded by drought and bushfires out of control, this is Australia. Our water supply is falling, water restrictions level 3, no rain insight.
